Rest, Repair, Recovery, and Refresh — for Optimal Health

These days, it’s become a badge of honor to push ourselves into an oblivion of exhaustion. Our job is the first place most of us do this. We angle for promotions or attempt to out-perform our co-workers.

We go in early. Rack up overtime. Bring work home from the office. Work on weekends. We stay constantly connected to the office and colleagues (and friends) through digital devices — whose blue light disrupts your circadian cycle. And we communicate with colleagues at all hours of the day or night.

We are paying for it with our health and relationships. Sometimes right away, and definitely over time. We reason that we will rest. . . when we accomplish__________.

What we tend to miss in this lopsided equation is the necessity for rest and recovery — adequate sleep, taking breaks during our workday, and also taking an occasional vacation from our everyday work routines.

It’s not a waste of time. It’s a non-negotiable set of biological needs. If we skimp on rest and recovery, we will degrade our performance and our ability to function correctly.
